A recent extensive study, unveiled at the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV) Congress 2023, explored the experiences of individuals afflicted with skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis (eczema), psoriasis, and acne. The research, which is yet to be formally published, gathered insights from over 17,000 participants across 20 countries and discovered that more than 40 percent of them grapple with sleep disturbances that significantly affect their physical well-being and work performance.
According to the study, approximately 42 percent of the respondents, numbering over 7,000 individuals, reported experiencing sleep difficulties as a direct consequence of their skin conditions. Charles Taieb, MD, who served as the lead author of this research and is the research director of European Market Maintenance Assessment, a private company dedicated to patient-centered projects, noted that these sleep disturbances were primarily attributed to itching in 60 percent of cases and burning or tingling sensations in 17 percent of cases.
Furthermore, the study revealed that these sleep-related problems had a substantial impact on the overall quality of life for patients with skin diseases. Notably, nearly half of the participants (49 percent) reported a decline in their work productivity due to these sleep-related issues.
